Crystal
River is one of the best places in Florida to visit when the temperature
starts falling in the northern states. This town is a short boat ride
from the Gulf of Mexico and wonderful fishing. The river here is crystal
clear and spring fed. In the late fall and winter the Manatee migrates
from the south to the warm water of this river. It is very common to see
the Manatees when you are on the river. The springs keep the water
temperature at approximately 68 degrees, therefore both the Manatees and
divers from all over the country flock to the springs during the winter
months.
Kings Bay in Crystal River is a picturesque haven for divers seeking the
Manatees and honing their diving skills. Quite a large number of dive
schools from out of state use this area to certify new divers and a
large number of these folks return again and again to dive in this
enchanting area.
Diving and snorkeling are just one of the
attractions in the Crystal River area. The fishing around here is also
terrific. Try your luck for Grouper, Trout, and Redfish, or, if you like
to go further out, you can find Dolphin and King Mackerel. Freshwater
fishing is also very good in these rivers as well, especially Largemouth
Bass and assorted pan fish such as Bream, Shellcrackers, and Speckled
Perch.
If you are a history buff visit the state archeological site in Crystal
River, you will find this very interesting. Just south of Crystal River
is the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Area that is a winter sanctuary for
migrating Waterfowl. The thousands of acres included in the area is also
home to most animals that are native to Florida, including the Florida
black Bear.
Furthermore, Chassahowitzka is also the winter home of a group of
Whooping Cranes that were raised in captivity and taught to migrate to
the state of Wisconsin by following an ultra light airplane. These
Cranes were on the brink of extinction and this is one ongoing program
to prevent their demise. Hopefully the program will be completely
successful.
Crystal River offers some outstanding restaurants for your dining
pleasure, especially if you enjoy fresh seafood such as Grouper,
Scallops, Oysters, Blue Crabs, and the best treat available: Stone Crab.
The Stone Crab is a great favorite because it is delicious but what is
great is when the fisherman catches Mr. Crab he simply removes one of
his claws and returns it to the water to re-grow the claw. You might say
it is the only seafood that is recycled. Yo!
Crystal River is filled with abundant accommodations and this is one of
those places that builds great memories. |
