Key
Largo is the first island in the chain of islands called the Florida
Keys. It is approximately one hour’s drive time from Miami International
Airport on the mainland to the dive capitol of the world, which is what
Key Largo is famous for.
One of the highlights of your visit to Key Largo will be a trip to the
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the United States’ first marine
preserve. This is a wonderful location for snorkelers to enjoy the under
sea life and be able to see a multitude of fish and living coral. Novice
divers don’t usually know coral is a living organism and it must not be
damaged, so be sure to explain this to your first time divers and
snorkelers. Key Largo will also quickly become the favorite spot for
underwater photographs, with all the different species of fish and the
different reefs which are so easy to access.
There are many ships which are submerged around Key Largo, many
intentionally, such as the five hundred ten feet long Navy transport
ship, Spiegel Grove that quickly became covered in coral and is now a
safe haven for many species of fish.
Key Largo has six areas called Sanctuary Preservation Areas which are
off limit to both spear fishing and hook and line fisherman. Try diving
in these areas if you want to see lots of different fish which have not
been harassed by anyone. Talk about up close and personal, it just
doesn’t get any better.
Bring your own boat or rent one on Key Largo, for there is an abundance
of full service marinas located here. Key Largo offers some top notch
fishing action, whether you want to try for grouper and snapper deep in
the reefs or Sailfish, Dolphin and Marlin in the Gulf Stream. Charter a
boat and the captain and crew will guarantee you a supreme effort and
you will be assured a great day on the water. If you prefer pursuing the
fish that congregate on the flats or in the mangroves there are guides
who are expert at finding these fish and putting you close enough to
catch your quarry.
Key Largo is a beautiful vacation destination with lots of things to do
for people who enjoy the great outdoors. Key Largo offers many choices
for lodging, hotels, motels, full service resorts or you name it and it
is available here. The dining in Key Largo offers great freshly caught
and prepared seafood along with just about any other type of meals you
enjoy.
Key Largo is a great memory maker, don’t delay the weather is fine and
mostly sunny. |
